Today I am feeling comical so within the past 5 years of my life studying health and fitness. I am going to share with you some advice and quotes that come with learning the lessons that I have learnt. You too can take some of these onboard and I hope you can spend the time reading and laughing.
1. “If you only got one ass, you can’t sit on two horses”.
Basically means choose one fitness goal and focus on it. You can’t train for a marathon and Mr Universe at the same time. For example, choose to run or to lift weights. Not to say you can’t lift weights once the marathon training is finished. Variety is always good.
2. “More bang for your buck”
This illustrates the benefit to performing “compound” exercises. Compound exercises, are exercises that work a lot of muscles at once. For example squats, deadlifts, press ups, lunges, and bent over rows etc. For most cases you are better off performing compound exercises as opposed to using three different machines that would work the same muscles separately. Additionally, compound exercises save time and improve the function of your body because you are replicating typical daily activities.
3. “You can’t fire a cannon from a canoe”.
The amount of people I have dropped this on is unreal. Most people honestly laugh. This quote stresses the importance of a strong core because if your muscles and stabilisers are weak there is no point in performing heavy and complex exercises. Furthermore this emphasises the importance of the success formula when prioritising your exercise journey. As a beginner you should prioritise you training structure in the following order:
Flexibility and muscle balance
Stability
Strength
Power
If you are not a skilled athlete or an experienced weightlifter do not start with power training because your canoe will break!
4. “If it weren’t here 10,000 years ago don’t put it in your mouth”!
I heard this saying from Paul Chek it makes a huge point. We are simply not designed to eat microwave meals, sugar, Monster, Lucozade etc. J.E.R.F – JUST EAT REAL FOOD.
5. “The best solution to pollution is dilution”
Meaning you need to hydrate yourself with adequate amounts of high quality water. Multiply your weight in kg x 0.033= daily water in take in litres.
